On “political booty calls” and other Latinx pet peeves!

April 23, 2021

It is said that politically, Latinx are unpredictable and unreliable. We say it is the other way around:

Most politicians just don’t get us yet. We’re not sure they care about what we care about.

Scrutinizing Latinx as a group is bound to bring disappointment to anybody that thinks they have figured us out, only to discover soon enough that what they see from the outside is not what it is on the inside.

You see, marketers and politicians are only reading about Latinx, interpreting statistics, as cold as statistics can be. That’s a pretty flat way of looking at us, therefore  it’s hardpredict how we’ll react. The fact is we are not unpredictable, nor cold! We are just like the fingers on a hand, “Juntos pero no revueltos”, as we love to say–“together but not scrambled”.

We feel that we are one of the cornerstones of this grand dream that this country is building, and still, as Latinx, we are being perceived as a disappointment, as fleeting, and conveniently forgotten until campaigns need our vote, and then we get that call, that “Booty call”…at the 11th hour.

Latinx are the fruit of a long and complex story, millions of individuals with a more or less common Spanish-speaking ancestry from a huge geographical, political, and historical background, that end up on this side of the border, in this great country that is a constant cultural melting pot.

Getting to know us Latinx better can be fun, and the learning curve smooth and entertaining. Here at Moira we believe that the best way to get to know the Latinx, is to hear our stories.

As Dr. Seuss said,

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

These are some of the reasons why, at Moira, we decided to launch a candid and informed Podcast: LatinXYZ Cohosted by Clemencia Herrera and Cecilia del Cid, two Latinas making a life for themselves in the US.

Although the co-hosts operate in the political advertising and social justice Latinx space, and it is their passion, in this podcast they talk candidly, like two wise “comadres”, about the culture, life, and the socio economic issues that have been in the political blind spot for too long.

They talk about what is important to them: as they are, regular people, that are

no different from any other Latinx voters, or parents, or students, or immigrants’ sons and daughters, or as immigrants themselves, as green card holders, or US citizens. As you listen to them talk about their struggles in a personal and intimate way, you will not only enjoy some fun and entertaining moments, you will feel as for that moment you’re walking in the shoes of the  Latinx community.

Truth is they do not pretend to have all the answers, and  might not even speak for every single Latinx out there, but there’s a part of sharing their life experiences that they hope might ignite something inside of you, and they hope it’s change, for the better. Because we deserve better.

We invite you to really listen to us talk about our daily life and struggles, instead of just “observing” us to “figure us out”, because we are part of this country, and your life as well. This podcast will feed off your questions, comments, feedback too. Don’t be shy, we can take it! Aquí nadie se siente.
